Watershed Manager – LaHave River Watershed

Summary

The LaHave River Salmon Association (LRSA) is seeking a motivated and knowledgeable Watershed Manager to lead key restoration and monitoring initiatives in the LaHave River watershed. This 20-week contract position plays a central role in advancing LRSA’s mission to protect and restore salmon habitat and freshwater ecosystems of the West Branch of the LaHave River WaterShed.

The successful candidate will develop a long term restoration plan, implement acid mitigation strategies, and oversee the coordination of habitat improvement projects, in partnership with stakeholders such as the Nova Scotia Salmon Association (NSSA) and local community groups.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a detailed three-year restoration plan for the west branch of  LaHave River watershed.

  • Oversee the completion of the Fire Brook liming project, in collaboration with NSSA.

  • Coordinate long-term environmental monitoring to assess the health of aquatic habitats and effectiveness of restoration efforts.

  • Identify new liming opportunities within Fire Brook and other acid-affected tributaries.

  • Explore acid mitigation strategies across the broader watershed, drawing on regional data and best practices.

  • Collect Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) data to prioritize future restoration areas.

  • Conduct rapid culvert assessments in a minimum of five tributaries to identify barriers to fish passage.

  • Prepare cost estimates for one high-impact restoration project annually in each of the three most promising watercourses.

  • Help Complete sumer reports 

  • Write Grants for 2026 field season

Qualifications

  • Degree or diploma in environmental science, biology, ecology, natural resource management, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

  • Strong background in watershed management, aquatic ecology, or salmon habitat restoration.

  • Experience with water quality monitoring, liming techniques, or acid mitigation is an asset.

  • Familiarity with the ecology and conservation needs of Atlantic salmon and other native fish species.

  • Proven ability to coordinate fieldwork, manage data, and collaborate with partners and stakeholders.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle for fieldwork.

  • Experience with ARCGIS

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple project components effectively.
